Recitar Cantando - early modern development of Music Theatre
Wednesday 26 February 2026, 9.45 – 11.15 Centre for Performativity Research, Konvikt, Univerzitní 3, room 4.28 (attic)
Most opera histories start with the “birth” of opera in the early 17th century, when sources, protagonists, the city of Florence, and the Orpheus myth aligned for a tale. But why this tale, and what is missing from it?
This lecture explores the broader context of development of Recitar Cantando – speaking as if singing – and asks how early (music) theatre historiography is a site that creates visibilities and invisibilities based on later conceptions of art, in an attempt to shape later cultural and social realities.
